Definitions - PageRank - 2/10/2005
PageRank - A ranking system developed by Google that gives each page on the internet a number between 0 and 10 (10 being the highest) based on the popularity. While the exact algorithm to derive PageRank is of course proprietary to Google and remains confidential, the main driver of PageRank is the number of incoming links to a site.
The thinking behind PageRank is that the more incoming links a particular page has, the more important that page is. Each incoming link is in effect a positive vote for the page. PageRank thus allowed Google to determine the popularity of each web page in a completely automated way.
PageRank is then used in combination with the actualy content of the web page in order to determine the ordering of results on SERPs. When introduced, the inclusion of PageRank in the algorithm to determine the highest ranking pages produced far more relevant results than any competing algorithm. This allowed Google to dominate the search engine market until competitors implemented similar algorithms.
